Post image for New B.o.B Album Leaks!

Almost any time there’s a highly anticipated hip-hop album nowadays, it leaks long before it’s due. That time is starting to come for B.o.B and his album The Adventures of Bobby Ray. Three new songs leaked today, and I won’t be surprised if the whole album is out by the end of the week. My favorite is the reworking of his single “Airplanes,” with Eminem hopping on a verse this time around. Remember the pissed off, psycho Slim Shady from a while back that made crazy good music? Eminem’s starting to sound a lot like that again. Enjoy.

B.o.B ft. Janelle Monae- The Kids

Chiddy Bang

August 24th. Mark your calendars. This is the day that music as we know it will change forever. Chiddy Bang is releasing their currently untitled debut album and it’s sure to be their best work yet. Xaphoon just informed us and I’m stoked. The dynamic duo of producer Xaphoon Jones and emcee Proto describe themselves as a “hipster’s wet dream” or “kings of the basement party”. Take it as you will, but their music is game-changing. Their debut mixtape, The Swelly Express was dope and got them signed to EMI Records, and Air Swell, which dropped this week, didn’t disappoint. You can tell, though, that they’re focusing all their effort on their debut album. I honestly cannot wait for this. I’m about to hit them up to beg for a preview. Listen to some Chiddy below.

MGMT Album Leaked!

March 20, 2010

in Latest

Congratulations

Check out MGMT’s new album, Congratulations, in it’s entirety on whoismgmt.com. The album leaked onto the internet so the band decided to screw it and just post it on it’s blog. You can’t download it through their site though; they still want you to go out and buy it. After all, they spent a ton of time on the project and want to make at least a little cash. You can try downloading it on Rapidshare or Filestube or something along those lines, but those are pretty sketchy sites and your computer may come down with a nasty virus. Possibly worth it. The album is sicker than your average virus.

To be honest, it’s really growing on me now. At first I thought to myself, “These dudes really have to lay off the acid.” because it’s just so damn psychadelic. I mean, it’s obvious that they were trippin’ on something when they recorded the Oracular Spectacular album, but that turned out dope as shit. This album is totally different, but is ridiculously chill and artsy If you’re looking for a continuation of Oracular Spectacular, you won’t find it, but Congratulations deserves just that. Congratulations MGMT for coming through and delivering this trippy bundle of joy. Check it out. You’re in for a ride.

Post image for Luke- The Dopeness (Mixtape)

A while ago we introduced you to A Cool Stick, the Maryland-based hip-hop/acoustic/funk band that’s been bringing us some awesome music since they started. Now, A Cool Stick lead man and emcee Luke O’Brien (or just Luke), has released his own solo project called The Dopeness. This free mixtape has a similar sound to a lot of the stuff that A Cool Stick has done, but it’s got more of a hip-hop feel.

Luke shows us his skills on the mic with some serious rhymes and a sound similar to that of Asher Roth, but I’d even go as far as to say that I think Luke’s the better lyricist of the two. He’s also got an ear for some awesome beats (listen to “The Dopeness” and “Understood”). It’s definitely a mixtape worth checking out, and you’ll no doubt be hearing more from this guy in the future. Check out the lead single, “The Dopeness,” then hit the link below to stream the entire album and download it for free.

J. Cole recently posted some pics of him and the Skateboard P working on some tracks for J. Cole’s upcoming album. Pharell’s a nasty producer, and this makes me even more excited for J. Cole’s new album. Not really feeling the new trash stash from Pharell, though. Either way, hit the jump for the rest of the pictures and a J. Cole interview with Los Angeles Leakers.

Though we at The MuSiK Box aren’t the biggest fans of Young Money (Drake and Weezy are great, but Lil Chuckee? Really?), we thought we should give you an update about the group’s upcoming album. This album was actually supposed to have dropped by now, but the release date keeps getting pushed back. By the time it’s actually released, most of the songs are probably already going to have been leaked. Officially though, December 21 is the release date.

Washington, D.C., is ecstatic. After years without any representation, there’s finally a black man running the city. His swagger is impeccable. His sense of style is on point. His way with words is captivating. His African roots give him universal appeal. We are, or course, referring to the hip-hop game and not the presidency. He’s the people’s champ and his name is Olubowale Folarin, but you can just call him Wale.

Much like President Obama’s rise to power, Wale had to put in a lot of legwork to become the Capital’s first nationally celebrated MC. The 24-year-old’s push actually kicked off back in 2006, when his go-go–fueled track “Dig Dug (Shake It)” got regular radio play in the D.C., Maryland and Virginia areas. That led to the release of two well-received mixtapes—Paint a Picture and Hate Is the New Love—and DJ/producer Mark Ronson signing on as Wale’s running mate. The joint ticket went on to rally more public support with “W.A.L.E.D.A.N.C.E.,” off Wale’s 2007 mixtape, 100 Miles & Running. The record’s success earned the rapper a major-label endorsement from Interscope in 2008, and paved the way for Wale’s inaugural album, Attention: Deficit.

Aside from a few head-scratchin’ lines throughout some songs and his narcissistic tendency to say his own name ad nauseam, Wale creates an impressive body of work for his first term in office. Not only does he stock his cabinet with a diverse list of musical advisers, ranging from DJ Green Lantern to rock band TV on the Radio’s David Sitek, he tackles key issues like education (“Be Right”) and suicide (“Contemplate”) head-on. With hip-hop continuing to take a creative downturn, Attention: Deficit is a long-overdue stimulus package. On the robust “Triumph,” Wale makes one resounding promise to his rap constituency: “I ain’t tryna be politically correct/But I won’t stop until I get my respect.” Finally it appears that through witty lines and worthwhile subject matter, a new sense ‘Hope’ and ‘Change’ have been brought to the nation’s hip-hop game.

Chief waKiL Interview

November 6, 2009

in Interviews

You may have never heard of chief waKiL, but it probably won’t be long before you do. The upcoming rapper from Missouri has spent the last few months working on a mixtape with big-time producer Brian Kennedy, and the two are now working together on waKiL’s debut album.

The MuSiK Box got a chance to ask waKiL a few questions about his mixtape, his future career plans, and more. If you haven’t downloaded the mixtape yet, you can get it here . Be sure to check out his song “Hack This, a remix of Jay-Z’s “Hate,” below. Also check out the mixtape for some great songs by waKiL himself as well as a few cool remixes of his.

  • Start off by telling us a little about yourself. (Ethnicity, Background, Family, Birthplace, etc.)

Well I’m half nigerian and american. I was born and raised in Kansas City, Missouri. I’m the 3rd of 4 children. I have an older brother, older sister, and a little sister. I was born on August 8th.

  • What was it like growing up in Missouri?

Growing up in Missouri wasn’t too rough for me, I was kept away from bad stuff that went on in my city, I didn’t have to witness any murders or anything. I just seen alot of crackheads and fights breakout and couldn’t stay outside too long in my old neighborhood due to gunshots that would be heard around he corner. But that was only when we would return to our Grandmother’s house which we would go to all the time, it was like our second home. I lost my cousin to the street life and I decided at a young age I didn’t want to involve myself in that stuff. I grew up with my parents separated because they divorced when I was 2, that was probably the hardest thing for me to deal with, i wanted a normal family like everybody else.

  • How did you discover your talent as an artist? Did you play instruments growing up?

I started playin the keys at like 3 or 4. I just saw one of my step brothers do it and i was so anxious to do it i believed I could play. So I told my family at a young age I wanted a keyboard for X-mas, ALL BECAUSE I wanted to play the Power Rangers Theme Song. Then I would listen to the radio and mock the songs to the best of my abilities.

  • How long have you been writing rhymes?

I started writing lil rhymes at like 7 years old, I would write a page and then go show my brother to read it. If I didnt get the reaction I wanted I would go and do another one and another and another until I got a different reaction.

  • What is your situation with education?

I dropped out of College. I have a high school diploma of course.

  • Where does the name Chief Wakil come from?

waKiL came from my last name WAKILI and the chief was just added on. Then I found out that my family many generations ago went by either “Chief” or “Wakili” because ‘chief’ was one of the definitions of our last name, when I found that out I just kept the chief on there. I’ve been contemplating on dropping the ‘chief’ but not now, IF I ever do.

  • Where do you draw inspiration from?

My BIGGEST musical inspiration is Michael Jackson. Besides coming up with clever raps and making people oooo and awwww over them, I wanted to be able to touch people or have people be inspired by or feel good about my music. I wanna touch people. I really like EMINEM, he’s my favorite rapper. I grew up listenin to A Tribe Called Quest, CL Smooth, Wu Tang, Mobb Deep, and Mase and more. In high school other than Eminem, I was very drawn to Kanye West, I felt he was just like me…then atleast. I loved how he (like the EMINEM AND MICHAEL JACKSON) could not only make good music but put on a good performance. I love performing and I appreciate a good performer…THATS AN ARTIST!

  • Describe your music for fans. Are there any artists you would compare yourself to?

I really don’t know how to describe my music. I really want someone to describe it for me. I switch from style to style and I don’t know what to call my music other than honest. I don’t write stuff that ain’t true unless its from imagination. I CAAAN say my music is somehow Non-Vulgar, BUT its not corny. The roughest people can still get into it at the same time a little innocent kid and as well as their parents. I don’t think I can be compared to any artists really. YOU TELL ME!

  • What type of music/What artists do you listen to alot?

I listen to ALL types of music ROCK/POP/COUNTRY/RAP/HIP HOP…EVERYTHING!!! I listen to myself alot too.

  • Are you pursuing any type of record deal right now? If so, any specific labels?

Ummm, yea definitely but me and BK want to finish this album first. I want the labels to be pursuing me if you know what I mean. I really have no speciic label I wanna sign with though. Just whoever has the best offer IF I go to label. So, for those who want to know WHY I’m not signed to a BIG label yet…thats the reason, I want to wait it out and develop myself and have a bit of a following first. I refuse to rush into a deal and allow them to change me as an artist and I come out the way I don’t want to.

  • Should we be expecting any new mixtapes or albums soon?

HACK THIS!!! Available now. Get it tell a friend to get it…ITS FREE. I really hope this mixtape gets tons of listeners cause it may be the last bit of work I put out for the rest of this year. I got to work on my album with BK. It’s not yet named but it’s going to be great. Keep in touch with me people.
