Some good new stuff dropped today, which isn’t very surprising considering it’s every musician’s favorite holiday. First off, some new Jay Electronica– it’s always good to get new content from this guy because his drops are so infrequent. Next, jj takes on Jeremiah’s “Birthday Sex.” It’s not as good as their “Lollipop” cover, but it’s nice. Finally, Rich Hil teams up with Cudi and Travis McCoy of Gym Class Heroes for two new cuts off his upcoming album.
Even if you’ve heard of jj before, chances are you know absolutely nothing about the duo. In fact, after taking to the World Wide Web to try to dig up some information on the Swedish pop band, the only thing I was able to find out was that it consists of some guy named Jaokim Benon and some girl named Elin Kastlander. Regardless, the one thing you will find from them is a lot of good music. Falling somewhere between pop and electronic, jj has some great songs, and Elin’s got an amazing voice. What’s more is that the duo appears to have a strange obsession with Lil Wayne, using him or his influences in three of their best songs.
In the first song, entitled “Ecstasy,” jj manages to create a trippy, drug-inspired track from a Lil Wayne song (ironic, right?). In “My Life,” they take the hook from The Game and Lil Wayne’s song of the same name and give it to us in a completely different way. It’s nice hearing someone deliver Lil Wayne lines in a not-so-raspy voice, and I’m not talking about when your girlfriend tries to rap to every Wayne song that comes on the radio. Finally, for “My Way,” jj integrates an actual Weezy verse into one of their songs, and the result is pretty cool. Check out all the songs below, and let us know what you think.
