mashup

I know a lot of people are probably sick of regular two song mashups, but this one is really good. It takes one-hit wonders Flobots’ track “Handlebars” and mashes it with Dr. Dre’s “Forgot About Dre.”

Interesting…. I’ll let the creator’s description speak for itself:

“I made this using the two full songs, “Tik Tok” by Ke$ha, and “California Gurls” by Katy Perry, cutting between them like crazy. I didn’t use any acapella or instrumental mixes.”

The White Panda

Dirty dirty dirty mashup, yet again. The White Panda has mastered the art of making dance floor-worthy mashups, and I’m loving this one. It’s a mix of Chris Brown, Annie, and Designer Drugs to keep your feet movin’.
Enjoy.

Big Z Remixes

This kid is ridiculous. He’s only 16 years old, but his beats are crazy and his instrumentals always go perfectly with the acapellas he chooses. Big Z does a different sort of remix– he takes a song and creates a brand new beat for it then throws the acapella on top. Sometimes, he even throws another artist in on the song (so you can hear Jay-Z and Biggie, Asher Roth and Weezy, and others rapping together). The kid’s definitely got a nice future as a producer. Hit the links below to download his two mixtapes, and click through to his YouTube page to hear practically his whole discography (including a couple mashups).

Norwegian Recycling has become famous across the internet for his multiple song mashups, and for good reason. He gets really creative with them, they always sound good, and he makes video mashups to go along with them. This is his latest creation, and it doesn’t dissappoint.

Samples:

1. Travis – Sing
2. Iyaz – Replay
3. Kelly Clarkson – Already Gone
4. Oasis – Wonderwall
5. Christina Aguilera – Genie In A Bottle
6. No Doubt – Don’t Speak

Now, you can get 32 of their best mashups in one place with this mixtape. Check out one of our favorite tracks, “Hot N Cold Rain” and the tracklist below.

Post image for Listen Up: DJ Moondance

I came across DJ Moondance pretty recently, and his two-song mashups have been rocking my iTunes ever since. Moondance first came onto the scene with his release of The Crash Album, a two-song mashup album of Dave Matthew’s Band and Jay-Z. What really caught my attention, though, was his Eminem/Red Hot Chili Peppers mashup album, Shadium Arcadium. He combines Red Hot Chili Peppers’ instrumentals with Eminem vocals, and the outcome is dope. He’s also got three other mashup albums of random and unexpected song pairings (Lil Wayne and Bob Marley?) that are all available for free on his website. Check out two of our favorites below and hit the link to check out the rest on his site.

Yes…this actually is a mashup of Lil Wayne and the theme music from The Office. It’s one of the most creative mashups I’ve heard in a long time, so check it out and enjoy.

E-603 Interview

January 24, 2010

in Interviews

Post image for E-603 Interview

If you haven’t yet heard of E-603, you probably will soon. Anyone who’s into mashups or sample-based music should know that E-603’s one of the best artists out there now, and it won’t be long before this guy is put on the same level as Girl Talk. We got a chance to have an exclusive one-on-one chat with him about his music, touring, his current listening, and more. Easily one of the chillest dude’s you could ever meet, he was also hilarious. Did you know that the name E-603 comes from his actual name which is Ethan Ward and his area code is 603? Now you do. Be sure to download Torn Up, E-603’s latest album here.

(Download the nasty album here)

Dirtbag Baby

1. So give us a little background on yourself and how you got started in music.

I started making music when I was young cause there were always a bunch of instruments lying around the house, and I taught myself to play a bunch of different ones. Then, when I was about 12 years old I started making actual recorded music, but it was all super experimental and bizarre stuff that was pretty odd. In high school I started making electronic music, and that was also when I started sampling other artists to put new lyrics on some of my instrumentals. Then, about 2 years ago a friend of mine suggested that I make a completely sample-based album, and I thought it sounded like kind of a cool idea. So I started working on it and spent, like, 15 hours a day working on this album, and that became Something For Everyone.

2. So you made this album while you were in college. Were you studying music at the time?

No, I was actually a film major in college. I had studied music in high school some, but I decided that I wanted to study film in college.

3. What sort of equipment and software do you use to make your mashups? Have you always used the same equipment?

When I first started making music, I was using tape recorders and stuff, but when I started doing sample-based stuff I got Cubase. Now I use the best version of Cubase and also Pro Tools a little bit. I’ve actually dug up some of my old stuff that I did before I had this good software, and it’s not too good.

4. Are you a Mac or a PC guy?

You know, I’m really sort of split down the middle? I do all of my producing on a PC, but that’s not cause I don’t like Macs or anything. I own a few macs and I like them a lot, but I started out producing on a PC and sort of just continued using them because it had all my music and stuff on it. I don’t know, though, I might use a Mac for my producing in the future.

5. How many songs do you have in your iTunes library?

Well I have a couple different computers, and they all have iTunes libraries, but I think that on my primary computer I have like 12,000 songs.

6. Does that include all the acapellas and instrumentals you have for your mashup work?

No, those are kept in a separate library.

7. Your mashups seem to have a lot of hip-hop influence. Is that the type of music you listen to most?

No, I actually listen to a lot of punk rock music, but it’s hard to sample that stuff because it’s so noisy. So I listen to a lot of good stuff that you won’t hear in my mashups because it’s really hard to sample.

8. Is music a full time job for you or do you have any other line of work?

No, I don’t have any other job. Right now I’m spending about 9 hours a day doing music. I’m finishing up a remix for a band called Southern Belle, who I met at a bar a while ago. I also did a remix of “Hot and Cold” by Katy Perry with some samples and rap lyrics that I threw in there.

9. As a mashup artist you probably don’t get as much recognition as other artists. Do a lot of people know you as E-603 in everyday life?

Yeah, I mean I definitely don’t get as much recognition as a lot of the other guys, but people will recognize me in the weirdest places. Or some people will just see my face on a show poster or something and they’ll know me from that.

10. Are most of the shows you play college shows?

Yeah, the majority are definitely college shows. I think I appeal to that demographic a lot. It’s a good crowd because it’s got a lot of people my age.

11. More than anyone else, we’ve heard you being compared to Girl Talk a lot. What do you think of those comparisons?

I like Girl Talk a lot, and it’s a pretty obvious comparison because we’re both sample-based artists and our music’s similar. I honestly never thought I would be compared to Girl Talk, so it’s pretty cool that people are putting me in that light. I would say that my music is more similar to his first album in which it’s really choppy and electronic. With Feed the Animals, he started dragging out samples more, but Torn Up is more like his earlier stuff.

12. Have you ever met Girl Talk?

Yeah, several times. We hung out a while back. We like to kick it if we’re in the same area.

13. What exactly is your area? Are you a Boston guy?

Yeah, I sort of live there. I don’t have a house there, but I’m there a lot of the time and I have a bunch of lifelong friends who live there.

14. Are you doing a lot of touring now?

Yeah, I’m touring all over the place. I’m sort of taking it day by day, but I’m doing like 1-2 shows per weekend. Nothing too extensive. I’ve been focusing a lot on producing lately.

15. What music are you listening to a lot lately?

I’ve had Julian Casablancas’ album on repeat lately. I also played a show with Passion Pit and their keyboardist turned me on to The Joy Formidable. And I listen to Paul Simon a lot.

16. Have you had any contact and/or feedback from the artists that you’ve sampled?

Yeah, and all the feedback has been 100% positive. I sampled Passion Pit and they invited me to do a show with them.

17. Are there any copyright complications with using only other artists’ material?

You know, I try not to worry about that. I haven’t had any problems so far and most of the artists appreciate the fact that I’m creating a new piece of art.

18. If you had to choose your favorite song that you’ve ever done, what would it be?

Hm…that’s a tough question. I would probably have to say “Lights Out” from Torn Up. It’s partially because I really like the way it sounds and partially because I really worked hard to get that song to sound the way it does.

19. Okay, so we’ve got one last question for you. If you could play a show with any other artist, who would you play with?

Wow, that’s a super tough question. I don’t know if I can even do it. I guess if I had to say I would probably want to play with The Misfits. And then probably She and Him with Zooey Deschanel. I’d love to shake her hand, maybe kiss her on the cheek.

The Best of 2009

January 2, 2010

in Latest

2009

So we thought about putting out a ton of different articles on the best of the year (albums, mixtapes, etc), but we figured you probably wouldn’t have time to read them all anyway. And even if you did, you’re probably so hungover from last night that you don’t really feel like it. So instead we’ve compiled all of our end of the year lists into one giant article. Enjoy.

Best Songs of 2009

These are some of the best songs of 2009 in no particular order. We know it’s long, but there was a hell of a lot of good music this year. If you haven’t heard these yet, check them out here.

  • Jay-Z – Empire State of Mind ft. Alicia Keys
  •

  • Portugal the Man- People Say
  •

  • La Roux- Bulletproof
  •

  • J. Cole- Lights Please
  • Kid Cudi- Cudi Zone
  • Blakroc- Hoochie Coo
  • Passion Pit- Little Secrets
  • Lupe Fiasco- Shining Down
  • Drake- Uptown
  • Wale- 90210
  • K’Naan- If Rap Gets Jealous
  • Miike Snow- Animal
  • Phoenix- 1901
  • Animal Collective- My Girls
  • Discovery- Osaka Loop Line
  • N.A.S.A.- Gifted (ft. Kanye West, Santigold, and Lykke Li)

The best song of 2009 was a tough award to choose, but we’ve decided that Kid Cudi’s “Pursuit of Happiness” and Eminem’s “Beautiful” ought to share the title.

Cudi surprised fans everywhere earlier this summer when he announced he would be working with both MGMT and Ratatat on the same track. This combination of one of the best hip-hop artists and two of the best electro-bands out there produced pure awesomeness. Not only did Cudi deliver a track that’s enjoyable to listen to, but he also helped create a fusion of hip-hop, electronic, and other musical styles in one amazing single.

Eminem made yet another comeback in 2009 and while his album Relapse did not compare to previous works like The Eminem Show or Encore, his single “Beautifu”l was easily one of the best songs of the year. “Beautiful” was written straight from the heart and caught attention from fans and non-fans worldwide. It was #1 on the radio forever it seemed and sometimes I just couldn’t get it out of my head. Em’s best work seems to come straight from the heart and we’re not complaining. Here’s to more great work from Eminem in 2010.

Best Music Video of 2009

There were some great music videos this year but the very best has to go to Empire State of Mind by Jay-Z and Alicia Keys. The video is black and white and shows Alicia playing the piano while singing in the heart of NYC while Jay-Z’s featured all over the city showing off famous sites in downtown New York. It’s hard to describe the video, but it must have been even harder to make. Watch it for yourself below.

Best Mashup of 2009

We’re big fans of mashups here at The MuSiK Box, and we’ve featured multiple mashup artists on the site such as Super Smash Bros, The White Panda, E-603, Girl Talk, etc. Not surprisingly, however, the year’s best mashup goes to DJ Earworm with “United State of Pop 2009″, his annual mashup of the Billboard Top 25 songs of the year. Just as impressive as the song is the video, where it is also flawlessly matched. Enjoy the song and video below:

Best Mixtapes of 2009

We all love good mixtapes. In fact, we love them so much that we’re even willing to put up with ridiculous DJ tags (“DJ ROCKSTAR!!!”) and often stupid skits and just enjoy the music. 2009 was a good year for any mixtape lover, but we’ve compiled a list of the best of the best, in no particular order. Check it out below.

  • B.o.B vs. Bobby Ray- B.o.B aka Bobby Ray
  • One Foot Out the Door- Mike Posner
  • The Cleveland Show- Chip tha Ripper
  • Burn After Rolling- Wiz Khalifa
  • A Matter of Time- Mike Posner
  • Dat Kid From Cleveland- Kid Cudi w/ DJ E-V
  • Diary of an ATL Brave- Donnis
  • The Warm Up- J. Cole

Tied for our BEST Mixtape of 2009 are Drake’s So Far Gone and Chiddy Bang’s The Swelly Express.

 Chiddy Bang-The Swelly Express

If you’re a frequent reader of this site, then you know we can’t get enough of Chiddy Bang. If you’ve ever listened to them, it’s likely that you can’t get enough of them either. Using Xaphoon’s cool samples and beats and Proto’s lyrics and flow, the group made every song on this tape a hit. If you haven’t heard it yet, do so now.

Drake- So Far Gone

There’s really not much to say. Drake’s first mixtape was epic. In his own words, “that shit sounded like an album,” and it did. Download, listen, enjoy.

Best Albums of 2009

Not only was 2009 was a good year for mixtapes, but it was a great year for albums. Here’s a list, in no particular order, of some of our favorite albums of 2009.

  • Man On The Moon: The End of Day- Kid Cudi
  • Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix- Phoenix
  • Manners- Passion Pit
  • The Blueprint 3- Jay-Z
  •  Attention: Deficit- Wale
  • Straight No Chaser- Mr. Hudson
  • Troubadour- K’Naan
  • Blakroc- The Black Keys and 11 others
  • Universal Mind Control- Common

Best Album of 2009, though, has to go to Mos Def with The Ecstatic. In the past, his music has been inconsistent because he was trying to find a balance between both mainstream and ideological ideas. In other words, he doesn’t want to sell out and become a Kiss FM artist which would compromise what he raps about, but he also wants people to like his music. The Ecstatic is the perfect mix, and The MuSiK Box loves it.
