MGK is from Cleveland and he continues to grow in skill, talent, and fanbase. A few months ago no one in Cleveland even gave two shits about this skinny white boy. Now he’s carrying a major load in the Cleveland hip-hop scene. He’s also only 19. I’m seeing some good things for this kid in the future. His debut album, Kellyvision, doesn’t have a release date yet, but this is the second single from it.

TuneUp for iTunes

September 22, 2009

in Latest

The technology music lovers have been waiting on for years is finally here. It’s called TuneUp, and it’s probably the best new piece of music software since iTunes. We all know how annoying it is when you download a bunch of music only to find out that it transfers into your iTunes library as Track 01, Track 02, Unknown Artist, etc. In addition, we’ve all seen in our iTunes when the same artist is listed a ton of different ways (Kid Cudi, KiD CuDi, kid cudi, KID CUDI), sometimes making it hard to find a song once that music is on your iPod. TuneUp literally fixes all of this and more. Simply install the $30 software, drag and drop the songs you want fixed into the sidebar, and watch it work its magic. It scans the music against an enormous database, identifies the song, and puts in the proper song title, artist, album, genre, and even the album cover. That’s not all, though. TuneUp recommends songs based on what you like, shows Youtube music videos of your songs, and even tells you when the artists from your library are going on tour and whether or not they’re coming to your home town. Simply put, this piece of software is amazing. Even if your iTunes library is already picture perfect, TuneUp is worth buying. With many other features and a relatively small price tag, TuneUp is an essential piece of software for any music lover.

Upcoming Artist: Chiddy Bang

September 21, 2009

in New Music

Hailing from Philadelphia, Chiddy Bang has set out to change the game of hip-hop. Chiddy consists of four individuals: one rapper (Proto),  keyboardist/beatmaker (Noah Beresin a.k.a. Xaphoon Jones), a guitarist (Pat Braz), and a drummer (Zach Sewall). This four-piece electronica/hip-hop outlet has made their mark by putting their own twist on a wide variety of already famous songs from an even more diverse selection of genres. Samples range from Kid Cudi to Passion Pit to MGMT to even Radiohead. To create their masterpieces, the Bang boys create refreshing remixes to a song and Proto, the MC, then tops it with unique and creative lyrics. The result is addictively catchy music. No word yet on a mixtape from Chiddy Bang, but I for one am anxiously waiting. In the meantime, check out these songs:

Kids (MGMT remix)

-Truth (Passion Pit remix)

-Day and Night (Kid Cudi remix)

-Because (Radiohead remix)

The self-proclaimed “best rapper alive” just got better. Jay-Z’s The Blueprint 3 lives up to, if not exceeds, it’s lofty expectations. Hova lives up to his reputation as the cockiest MC in the game with lines such as: ” I don’t run rap no more, I run the map” and “10 number 1 albums in a row, who better than me?” After years of self-hype and praise, it sounds like Jigga-man is finally living up to the title.

The album features an all-star lineup. The majority of the tracks are produced by Kanye West while Timbaland, No I.D., Al Shux, and the Neptunes also contributed. The bp3 is packed to the brim with well-known guest artists such as Alicia Keys, Drake, Mr. Hudson, Pharell, Kid Cudi, Swizz Beats, Kanye West, Young Jeezy, Luke Steele (of Empire of the Sun), Rihanna, and J. Cole (Jay-Z’s first artist signed to the new RocNation label). J. Cole is featured on “A Star is Born” and he has a nasty verse, giving a sneak peak of his unique flow and creative lyrics. Be sure to keep an eye on this young and talented upcoming artist in ‘09-’10.

Overall, The Blueprint 3 is Jay-Z at his finest. The album was already highly anticipated in part because of the instant success of Jay’s previously released singles “Run This Town” ft. Rihanna & Kanye West (already reached #3 on U.S. Billboard Hot 100) and “D.O.A.” (#24). With all of the star power and flat out solid work, this hit-maker may just have produced his 11th straight #1 record. I encourage you to go cop Hova’s album and I have no doubt you’ll be glad you did.

After dropping two of the best mixtapes of the past year, Kid Cudi had a lot to live up to for his first album. Frankly, he delivered. Man on the Moon: The End of the Day, Kid Cudi’s first full-length studio album, is a testament to not just his musical talent but also his incredible versatility as an artist. From the emotional and lonely “Soundtrack 2 My Life,” to the upbeat and catchy “Up Up and Away,” this album captures every dimension of Kid Cudi’s complex mind. In addition, Cudi sets out to silence the many critics who claim that his lyrical and rhyming ability aren’t good enough to allow him to last in the rap game. In “Cudi Zone,” perhaps the best track on the album, Cudi delivers an emotionally charged and lyrically ingenious track with a flow that is sure to silence all those critics.

Cudi’s many collaborations on this album, including Kanye West, MGMT, Ratatat, and Common display his ability to connect with an extremely wide range of artists. The album also features a collaboration with a certain “Billy Cravens,” which is actually an alias for an artist who, according to a tweet by Kid Cudi, “wants to keep his identity private.” Rumors have circulated claiming that Cravens is anyone from Lupe Fiasco to Michael Jackson. According to Cudi, however, “the world will never know.” The production team on this album, including Kanye West, Dot da Genius, and Emile, is top of the line. One of the album’s best tracks is the Ratatat-produced “Alive,” which features Cudi rapping over a trippy electronic Ratatat instrumental. The combination couldn’t be better. He also continues to put Cleveland, Ohio on the map by partnering with fellow Cleveland MC Chip tha Ripper on the laid-back stoner track “Hyyer.” Dat Kid From Cleveland has succeeded in creating one of the best albums of the year, but this is just the beginning. He’s got much more work on the way, so keep your ear out. You’ll be hearing from him again soon.

Kid Cudi set out to prove something with this album, and he succeeded. Even given the success of his mixtapes, there were many people who expected Cudi’s first album to be a faliure. In fact, it’s just the opposite. This is an album that you MUST have. He showed the world that he’s not just in this for 15 minutes of fame. He’s here to change hip-hop, and so far, he’s doing a good job. Kid Cudi’s here to stay in the rap game, and we couldn’t be happier.
