I have to admit that when I heard the first few songs from Shwayze’s newest album, Let it Beat, I was a little disappointed. There was something different about the songs, and they didn’t seem as instantly catchy as those from his debut album. However, the more I listened to the album, the more it grew on me, and it’s now gotten to the point where I can’t stop listening to it. While I’m still not ready to say that it’s better than his last album, it’s pretty damn close.

Shwayze continues to prove that no one in the industry fuses hip-hop and rock and roll better than he and partner Cisco Adler. This album has a bit more of a rock feel than his last album, but Shwayze continues to spit clever, witty, and creative lines in his signature fashion. Cisco Adler changes it up a bit, singing actual verses in a few songs rather than just jumping in on every hook. He also experiments with some more electric rock sounding songs instead of sticking with his usual chill, acoustic sound. As usual, the majority of the duo’s songs are about the lives of two hard-core partiers in love with weed, women, and alcohol.

While this album is a bit different from Shwayze’s first one, the changes are good ones, and it’s definitely worth buying the whole thing. Check out “Heart and Soul,” one of the album’s best tracks, below.

Forget that Weezy F. Baby is going to jail and enjoy another mixtape masterpiece from the lyrical genius. The title of Lil Wayne’s mixtape “No Ceilings” is meant to suggest that he has no upward limits, and it’s hard to disagree. Known for releasing an insane amount of new material in very little time, Lil Wayne’s most recent mixtape “No Ceilings” does not disappoint.

Characteristic of Weezy, the mixtape features a plethura of remixes to popular radio hits such as “I Gotta Feeling”, “Run This Town”, “Make Her Say”, “D.O.A.”, “Swag Surfin’”, “Breakup” and “Ice Cream Paint Job”. I was not a fan of the majority of these original songs, but Wayne’s touch of creative lyrics and nasty flow have made them great. Weezy’s much anticipated albums “Rebirth” and “Tha Carter IV” are due to come out by year’s end, at least before he hits the clinker, but “No Ceilings” is at the level of alot of recent full hip hop albums. As music critic Matthew Chimes says: “No Ceilings” is double dirt sauce…it goes above and beyond my expectations”. How is it that Wayne can put out mixtape after mixtape, yet the calibur of the music is still that of a full blown album? I’m not here to complain of course, I’m just in awe yet again. For now I’ll just sit back, relax, and enjoy the flow.

Mike Posner’s newest mixtape, One Foot Out the Door, originally supposed to be released tomorrow, was leaked early today and is now available on iTunes. This mixtape shows a lot of growth from Posner and is definitely a nice preview of what his 2010 album will be like.

The tape is very similar to Posner’s last one, A Matter of Time, but we can tell that Mike’s grown a lot as both an artist and producer. It doesn’t feature as many covers as A Matter of Time did, something we were looking forward to for this one. However, the covers Posner does do on this are pretty nasty, including an exceptional take on John Mayer’s “I Don’t Trust Myself (With Loving You).” Most of the other songs are Posner’s own, and there are some pretty incredible tracks on there. His two collaborations with Big Sean are two of the best songs on the tape and are actually better than anything I’ve heard from Big Sean on his own mixtapes. The two make a great team and are definitely a pair to watch for in the future.

There’s some other great artists featured on the mixtape including Kid Cudi, XV, GLC, Saigon, and Clinton Sparks. Though a few of these songs were dropped a while ago, they’re all definitely worth listening to again (his remixes of 3oh!3’s Don’t Trust Me with Kid Cudi and XV’s Mirror’s Edge are both great songs). The production on the mixtape, mostly done by Posner himself, is top of the line, and it’s nice not to have any “CANNON” tags interrupting the songs anymore. This is definitely one of the top mixtapes to be dropped this year, but I still feel like it’s going to be topped by Posner’s first album. Mike continues to prove that he’s one of the best new artists out there, blending hip-hop, pop, and electronic music into a different category that’s unique and incredibly entertaining. We’re looking forward to seeing what this guy does in the future, but for now we’re just enjoying the awesomeness of his latest debut.
