Chiddy Bang

August 24th. Mark your calendars. This is the day that music as we know it will change forever. Chiddy Bang is releasing their currently untitled debut album and it’s sure to be their best work yet. Xaphoon just informed us and I’m stoked. The dynamic duo of producer Xaphoon Jones and emcee Proto describe themselves as a “hipster’s wet dream” or “kings of the basement party”. Take it as you will, but their music is game-changing. Their debut mixtape, The Swelly Express was dope and got them signed to EMI Records, and Air Swell, which dropped this week, didn’t disappoint. You can tell, though, that they’re focusing all their effort on their debut album. I honestly cannot wait for this. I’m about to hit them up to beg for a preview. Listen to some Chiddy below.

Post image for Theodore Grams- Great Job! (Mixtape)

It’s finally here! Theodore Grams drops his much awaited Great Job! mixtape today, and it’s dope. The 26-track album features vocals and production from Theo along with guest production from Xaphoon Jones of Chiddy Bang and guest vocals from a few Philadelphia rappers. Most of the songs are originals, but Theo also goes in over some industry instrumentals and uses some pretty cool samples, too.

Theodore Grams isn’t your everyday rapper; his lyricism, independence, and sometimes controversial stances set him apart from a lot of the other rappers out there, and he’s not just another hip-hop artist out to score the next radio hit. None the less, his songs are dope and it’s definitely a mixtape worth downloading. Check out two of the mixtape’s tracks below along with the tracklisting.

Post image for Upcoming Artist/Mixtape: Theodore Grams

If you heard Xaphoon Jones’ solo mixtape, Xaphoon Jones Vol. I, then you might just remember a guy on there named Theodore Grams. Grams, a Philadelphia-based rapper and producer, is just starting to make his come up in the industry with the upcoming release of his second mixtape, Great Job!

Grams’ first mixtape, released a while ago, received little critical reception or coverage, so he hopes that his second release will serve as his breakthrough project. I’ve had the privilege of having some personal correspondence with Grams about the new tape, and I can say that I’m pretty excited for it. The two tracks I’ve heard show a lot of growth from Grams as an lyricist and a producer since his last release. He’s definitely a hip-hop artist, but he also insists that his tape has something for everyone. The self-proclaimed music fanatic, who says he loves everything from hip-hop to techno to country to folk, is also working with Chiddy Bang’s Xaphoon Jones on a few of the mixtape’s songs. If you’ve ever heard Chiddy Bang, you know that Xaphoon Jones is an incredible beat maker, and we expect some cool stuff from his work with Theo.

There’s no release date for the mixtape as of yet, but we’re expecting it to drop pretty soon. Be prepared for a cool mix of styles and artists, some cool guest features, and some dope production. This mixtape will not only feature Theo’s own songs, but also some other artist on Theo’s home made beats. Check the site soon for more news on Grams and his new mixtape. For now, be sure to check him out on Myspace and preview the video of his latest song, “P.U.I.C.Y.” We’re expecting a single from the man soon, so keep your ears open.

A lot of people have said that hip-hop is dead. With songs like “Turn My Swag On” and “You’re a Jerk” topping the charts and artists like Soulja Boy and Gucci Maine ruling the radio, who can blame them? However, there are quite a few artists out there who are revitalizing hip-hop and making it a respectable genre once again. Working right alongside these artists are some amazing producers, young and old, who are helping these artists bring hip-hop back. We’re going to introduce you to some amazing upcoming producers who we believe are the future of the game. Today is volume 1 which features one of our personal favorites, Xaphoon Jones.

1. Xaphoon Jones

xaphoon jones

Not many people would expect a white boy from Philly to become one of the best new hip-hop producers out there, but Xaphoon Jones is perhaps the most exciting figure in the future of hip-hop production. Working both in his band, Chiddy Bang, and as an individual DJ, Xaphoon has some incredible skills when it comes to music manipulation. Just listen to “I Wanna Know Now” off the Xaphoon Jones Mixtape Volume I in which he mashes up MGMT’s “Kids” and Bob Marley’s “I Wanna Love You” so perfectly that it’s scary.

For some of his crazy beat-making skills, download Chiddy Bang’s The Swelly Express mixtape. Listen to songs like “Danger Zone” and “Now U Know” and you’ll know exactly what we’re talking about. Even though Xaphoon can conjure up some crazy beats, his best attribute is his incredible ability to build a song around almost any type of sample. Using samples from artists ranging from Passion Pit to Kid Cudi to Sufjan Stevens, Xaphoon incorporates them in ways you’d never imagine and works them seamlessly into his signature hip-hop/electronic style. If you plan on following hip-hop in the future, Xaphoon Jones is definitely a name you’re going to want to remember.

Chiddy Bang Interview

November 8, 2009

in Interviews

Post image for Chiddy Bang Interview

The MuSiK Box got a chance to ask Chiddy Bang, one of The MuSiK Box’s “Bound To Blow: 2010″ artists, about their recently released mixtape The Swelly Express, future plans for the duo, and more. The group is made up of lyricist Proto and DJ/Producer Xaphoon Jones. They are quickly proving themselves to be one of the best upcoming duos in the business, so keep an eye on them. Check out “All Things Go” from their new mixtape for a nice example of Proto’s creative lyrics and flow and Xaphoon’s producing skills. The song is just one of many great songs on the mixtape, so be sure to visit their myspace page to download the entire album.

Chiddy Bang- All Things Go

1. First off, what has Chiddy Bang been up to lately? The last we heard from you was a while ago.

  • P- We been grinding man, tryna make some things happen. Just dropped “The Swelly Express” mixtape and it’s doing real well out there. Look out for more stuff coming soon.
  • XJ – Finished a tape, and now we’re playing lots of shows. Also got some super-secret projects in the works.

2. To start off with some general questions, how was Chiddy Bang first formed? And where exactly did the name come from?

  • XJ – Chiddy Bang was our logical extension of Chidera’s first name. It started when we were freshman in college and we found we had a mutual desire to not let school get in the way of making music.
  • P- Chiddy Bang has extensive origins. Back in high school I started a label called Chiddy Bang Entertainment…We put out mixtapes and made some money. Fast forward to Drexel University….We linked up with the help of some wonderful people and were able to create magic…. When I started working with Xaphoon we decided to call ourselves Chiddy Chiddy Bang Bang. We shortened that for obvious reasons and just decided to go by Chiddy Bang. It worked out.

3. Xaphoon Jones, your solo work is great stuff. We especially like “I Wanna Know Now” and “Testify.” How long have you been producing?

  • XJ – Muchos gracias. I have been making recordings since I was 10 and producing hip hop since I was 14.

4. How exactly did you get the names “Proto” and “Xaphoon Jones”?

  • P- Proto is just an alias that I’ve had since high school….It was short for “Prototype.” One of the definitions of prototype is an original copy….I felt my rap style was influenced by a lot of people but at the same time delivered in a very original way…It stuck, and people been calling me Pro since then.
  • XJ – Xaphoon Jones is just one character, one alias, of many. The name was created by my good friend Tennis Brown, who named me this when we were playing many open mic nights in South Philadelphia. If you open up the Malstrom synthesizer in the software program called Reason, you will understand the name. A Xaphoon is also another word for a bamboo Saxophone.

5. Now, about your new mixtape that came out on October 29. How would you describe the immediate feedback?

6. Have you guys worked with any high-profile artists or producers lately? And Xaphoon, did you produce the whole album yourself?

  • XJ – Yes. I produced the whole album myself. I’m currently producing a mixtape for an artist that I can’t say his name in this article, but if you’re familiar with DJ Premier and M.O.P. and the golden era Brooklyn stuff, you will know him.

7. How would you guys describe this mixtape, The Swelly Express? How does it compare to the stuff you guys have done in the past?

  • P- The Swelly Express is really a documentary of the day in and day out ordeals of two kids following their dreams in an effort to make an impact in a industry that is ever changing…It’s really conceptual compared to our previous work…We wanted to give people a clear image of what we’ve been up to and I think we accomplished that.
  • XJ – The swelly express is a pretty cinematic mixtape. It tells a story. This would be the first time I’ve worked on anything like that.

8. Who are some of your favorite artists and producers? Who would you consider your major inspirations? Who are you listening to most right now?

  • XJ – I really like Tony Baritone, Dr. Lukasz Gottwald, and Theodore Grams.

A message from Proto: “We are on the grind….Got a wonderful team behind us, and the sky is really the limit. Big shout to our management and everybody that has invested time into making Chiddy Bang music easily accessible to the public. Stay tuned!”

This song, called “All Things Go,” is another joint off of Chiddy’s upcoming mixtape The Swelly Express. It samples Sufjan Steven’s “Chicago” and features a nasty rap by Proto.
